The media are full of reports of catastrophes: at Fukushima radioactive water is continuing to leak into the environment, the civil war in Syria is claiming an ever higher toll of lives, in Greenland the glaciers are melting, and somewhere in Asia the next pandemic is lurking. Security is more than just a fashionable topic. Risks and dangers are a basic dimension of human life. And yet, in the last few decades, some things have changed.
